| Writing from experience Welcome to my domain. It's a small but exquisitely formed site where (if I'm honest) 'Typing Tony' seems to steal the show. Damn these visually creative people. But I'd like to think the words on here matter too - because that's what I do best. Words. So what can I tell you about Hartley Watts and the service I provide? Well the service is as personal as it's possible to be. There's only me. Tony Watts the communicator. No juniors or lackeys. I take the brief, apply over 35 years of professional experience and produce copy that really works. That doesn't mean I only do small jobs for small organisations. In fact, most of my work is for very large companies and Government departments as well as some very respected agencies. During my career I have worked as a journalist, a PR and a marketer, but always (for me) the words come first. I've written for a worryingly large number of different organisations on every topic imaginable for almost every conceivable audience, and in styles ranging from light and frothy through to heavyweight and corporate. Because of that, nothing fazes me and - I promise you - give me a good brief and no-one will come up with copy that works harder to achieve your objectives. I work to one very basic principle: remember your audience. So much copy you read has been written purely from the standpoint of the company or the individual writing it. That's OK, but how do you make the connection if you're speaking at - and not with - someone? So I find out what an audience will already know, what they need to know and how they want to be spoken to - and then create a path through. "Only connect," wrote EM Forster. How right the man was. I apply the same principle whether I'm ghostwriting for a Government Minister, producing a technical article for a business audience, generating sparkling ad copy or turning out a speech to be delivered to 5,000 people and designed to put a tear in their eyes. It works for me, and it works for my clients. But that's enough for this page. Click on to the menu top right to find out more about what I do, who I do it for and what I charge. Oh, and if you'd like to see some of my work designed to entertain and amuse, click on the 'Sticky Patch'. |
